About the Name Manuel

The nasally pronounced letter N is the symbol for all things negative, naysaying, and nullifying, and injects an undeniable air of pessimism into the words it initializes (no, not, never, nyet, nada, nix, nothing, naught, ninny, and nowhere). On the other hand, the letter M is the symbol for maternal, motherly love and together with the N produces a warm humming sound. This is why so many words that feature the M and N exude the reassuring hum of: clemency, humanity, communal, harmony, money and hymnal. In names like Monnie and Minnie, this soothing effect is augmented by the diminutizing Y sound found in: doggy, kitty, silly, goofy, blankie, etc.

With the exception of the name Monica (with has the cutting edges of the letter C) there are no rough edges in the MN names and it’s not surprising that Walt Disney chose an MN name for his second-favorite mouse. If we instinctively sense that these are benign and trustworthy people, you can be sure that MNs use this to their full advantage. But as unassuming and gentle as they can be, everything is not sugar and spice when it comes to these highly intelligent individuals; these are people with clear insights into what they want, and are not unwilling to dial up the charm to get it.

While many adults appreciate the MNs’ candidness and emotional openness, children universally seem drawn to their simplicity and sense of fun. About the only time you’ll see MNs display open irritation is when they’ve been denied something they believe was their right…like everyone’s full attention. And because these people have impeccable tastes you’ll have to think Dom Perignon, crystal flutes and orchids if you’re going to keep them happy. If this is too much to ask, just remember that there’s someone else who’ll be more than willing to do it. Most MNs have been treated with kid gloves ever since they were young, and every lover they’ve ever has probably reinforced this belief.

You’re in for a treat if you’re lucky enough to marry an MN. Their ability to see silver linings in every cloud makes them low-maintenance partners and high-spirited companions. At worst they’ll be a little whiny when they don’t get their way, but on the bright side, they’re apt to give their partners the same kind of unconditional attention that they themselves crave.

The MNs star shines brightest when they become parents, and their children will never have to guess where they stand on the issues. They may take some criticism for their liberal style of discipline (especially from the traditional schools of thought), but the proof of the pudding will be in their brood’s high self-esteem.
