About the Name Anthony

Whenever the authoritarian letter A and the negative letter N are combined at the beginning of a name, they set up the feeling of anxiety found in the words anger, antagonize, anti, anguish and annoy. The sharp tones of the terminating letter T don’t help matters either, for it’s from the ANT phoneme that we get the words; anthrax, distant, vacant, adamant, errant, and defiant, as well as the negative anti-prefix: antichrist, antisocial, and antithesis. In the name Anthony, these effects are largely offset by the spiritually uplifting TH phoneme, from which we get: thoughtful, theological, thankful, thorough, thespian, and theater.

Until you get to know ANTs quite intimately, expect them to project an aura of holier-than-thou and standoffishness; for ANTs feel a responsibility to keep their friends (and society in general) on the straight and narrow. Nothing pleases them quite so much as spotting someone in need of advice and ANTs will feel quite free to wag their fingers in the face of these unfortunates. Because this habit doesn't win them many friends, ANTs often find themselves to be alienated without ever understanding why.

Although there's a bit of the class nerd in every ANT, they somehow manage to come across as being classy and quasi-sophisticated. To successfully converse with one of these brighter-than-average individuals, one needs to be well versed in everything from contemporary politics to the current alignment of the planets…and be prepared for a scholarly discussion on the topic to boot.

While ANTs experience a certain amount of internal angst, it’s tempered by their thoughtful and analytical approach to life, and despite their touchiness, are desirable employees to have around when a structured, no-nonsense environment is called for. They’re the ideal administrative assistants, always checking clocks and marking calendars and never running late for appointments. You could expect the ANT to take twelve pages of notes for a half-hour meeting and then make copies for everyone. It’s interesting that their namesake is a small, dynamic, hardworking insect that can carry ten times its own bodyweight.

The ANT's home life is a well-ordered affair with family members easily adapting to their place in the scheme of things. ANTs are anything but clingy, and although their authoritative side will occasionally flex its muscles, their firm and clear-headed parenting style will give their children the restraint and confidence for which they’ll be grateful in later years.
