When the mellow and maternal letter M initializes a name, it evokes an air of reassuring calm much as a mother hums soothingly to her child. As the initial letter of mother, maiden, matron, merciful, mama, it’s understandable that female M names occur with twice the frequency of male M names and that they manage to project such a powerful feminine presence. It is also significant that all the names in this category terminate in vowels which tend to convey cheerful characteristics found in words like: happy, gay, pixie, yippee, joy, cutie, funny, and whoopee.
These are women, who -- true to their maternal self-image -- tend to see themselves as the primary nurturers in everyone’s life and try to keep loved ones close to their bosoms. Even when the situation calls for them to project authority (which they readily do) Ms never lose their sensible center. Paradoxically, because Ms operate from such a loving base, their outward behavior is often construed to be controlling: like strict schoolmarms who care deeply about the wellbeing of their charges. Those in the know realize that their somewhat inflexible methods are simply ways of expressing concern.
These passionate women are often drawn to professions in which they’re able to express their artistic viewpoints. If Ms have the opportunity to find work in the design, writing, or music fields they’re going to be fulfilled and challenged, but if they find themselves in the 9-5 grind with no way of unleashing their creativity, they simply aren’t going to be unsatisfied. Ms aren’t only sweetness and light in the business world and can be quite successful in cutthroat situations as well. The fact that many people underestimate their toughness plays right into their hands and they’re not above a little feminine manipulation when it suits their objectives. Even though many Ms enjoy success as small business owners and corporate managers, like most people whose names begin with the letter M, money is rarely to be their primary focus.
Just because children instinctively trust these protective people doesn’t mean that Ms are going to be delighted to have them around: nurturing and the responsibilities of child-raising sometimes take more energy than the M can afford. But partnership is a natural state for the Ms, who love being part of a couple even at the expense of their autonomy. Most of the time, it’s the Ms’ mates who are more likely to give up their freedom when the M co-opts them into all kinds of bonding adventures. As long as her partner seems to be making an effort to keep her happy, the M will reciprocate and be as loyal a mate as anyone could wish.
