About the Name Pearl

It’s always interesting to observe how the addition of a single letter in a name can have such a dramatic effect. Ordinarily, PR names evoke the strict masculine images we find in the words provocateur, pride, profane preachy, prick, priest, prostate, and protector. But when modulated by the letter L – the flagship of life, liberty, learning, lust and love – these potentially prickly PR names are steered into symbols of gracious gentility: primly, prolific, pearl, prettily, parental, and parasol.

But the genteel PRLs are not exactly known for their calm disposition and serene outlook on life. These are determined individuals who know what they want, and will do whatever it takes – short of hurting other people – to achieve their goals. It’s not easy to get a PRL upset, for she seems to handle everything with a wise restraint and a philosophical air. But her ire will be up and her passion on full display when it comes to fighting injustice…  particularly on behalf of the disadvantaged.

PRLs carry with them a sense of an old soul… as if they’ve seen more than their years would suggest. As children they often set themselves apart from their peers and acted as arbitrators rather than co-conspirators. This may account for the PRL’s independent streak in which she never feels as if she quite belongs. And while it would be an exaggeration to say that the PRL is a solitary sort, she is certainly autonomous and has no qualms about doing things on her own. It wouldn’t be unusual for a PRL to take off on a mini-vacation by herself (during which she’ll prove to be very capable company).

The ‘lonely’ professions (writing, design and research) suit the PRLs’ self-sufficient personalities perfectly. Spending time alone gives them a chance to recharge their batteries and smell the roses. Still, PRLs genuinely enjoy the stimulation that comes from small groups of close friends, but not being the flashy types, would rather hang around the local watering hole than the hottest new nightclubs in town.

When PRLs mate, they do it for life, even if it results in a long-suffering union.  They simply don’t have time to waste in flitting from one partner to the next, and that’s why they are so careful in choosing their spouse. The only problem with PRLs’ approach to parenthood -- if they choose to be parents -- is in encouraging their children to hang around long after they should have flown the nest.
