About the Name Angela

With its superficial connection to the word angel, the ANG root seems to promise a personality brimming with virtue and innocence. But on closer examination, we find that when the authoritarian letter A and the negative letter N (no, nothing, nyet, nein, never, nowhere, and naught) appear at the beginning of names, it sets up the level of tension found in the words; anger, antagonize, anxious, anti, anguish and annoyance. Fortunately, the letter G in these names is the softly pronounced version -- as in genial, gentle and generous -- and mitigates some of the AN’s bite.Names that incorporate the GL phoneme (Angela, Angelina, etc) have the added advantage of being associated with the lighter side of life, as seen in the words: gleam, glitter, glitzy, glamorous, glint, glimmer, and glow.

In an attempt to further soften the implications of the darker aspects of the AN phoneme, many women use the feminizing Angie version of this root. It’s always significant when individuals choose to end their names with this diminutizing sound, because the addition of the letter Y at the end of a name softens its aggressive qualities as mothers do when they end words with high-frequency tones (cat becomes kitty, dog becomes doggy, and blanket becomes blankie).

It’s true that ANG personalities exhibit many of the qualities associated with angels; they are mysterious and ethereal, but also slightly dangerous. It's also good to be on your guard with an ANG around, because you never know when their sunny dispositions are going to cloud over and cast a chill over the encounter. ANGs usually don't mean any harm, but their moods seem to change faster than they can handle, which leaves them unprepared for the impact of their emotions. And although the ANGs’ gifts may not lie in the area of empathetic friendship, they have their own particular ways of showing they care. Once you’ve been adopted into their tight circle of friends, you’ll never wont for someone to watch your back.

To successfully partner an ANG, you’ll need a blend of patience, imagination and independence. Although the ANG personality craves the kind of intimacy that comes from being attached at the hip, they also require plenty of room in which to experiment and are certainly not the stay-at-home types. So don’t expect the traditional family routine of backrubs and breakfast in bed. Instead, you’re likely to be treated to a wild ride of unexpected affection and unconventional bonding rituals.
